2007 AGM Report

AGM REPORT 2007

A change of the guard was the main element of the recent Ballyglass AGM with chairman Johnny Vahey stepping down, and Joe Glynn and Tom Malone stepping aside as A and B team managers respectively.

Johnny invited club secretary Breege Jennings to read the minutes from last years AGM. There were no matters arising.

Chairman’s Address

Johnny welcomed everyone to the AGM. He mentioned the step down from the Super League this season but felt sure that the bonfires and bunting would be seen in Ballyglass in the future. He appealed to the players to stick with the Club, the Club that brought them through the various youth levels.

Johnny spoke about the weekly lotto being the mainstay of the club with the annual Golf Classic our main single fundraiser. He announced June 2nd as the date for this years Classic to be held once again in the beautiful surroundings of Ballinrobe Golf Club.

He thanked all the lotto ticket sellers, the seven pubs who host the lotto draws and everyone who purchases lotto tickets.
He thanked TC Connolly and M & C Financial Services & Premier Estates Maloney for their generous sponsorship of the Golf Classic and hoped the club could count on their support in the future. He thanked Joe Sheridan for all the work he put into last years classic stating that the Ballyglass FC Golf Classic is one of the best run classics around.

Johnny announced that the training pitch is now ready for use - there were a few teething problems which led to the development taking longer than originally anticipated, but it has stood the test of a very wet winter. The club have applied for lotto funding for an astro turf pitch and Johnny thanked Breege for all her work on this application.

As he steps down from the role of Chairman, Johnny thanked his fellow officers, and stated that he was honoured to have had the role of chairman for the past three years. His goal when he became Chairman was the development of the back pitch with training lights and to install central heating in the dressing rooms and club house, all of which has been achieved. The end of his address was met with applause from all present.

Secretaries Report:

Breege welcomed all to the meeting and expressed her disappointment at the small turnout of players present.
She spoke about the development of the website and particularly thanked Martin O'Connor for all the work he has done on this project.
She stated that a Code of Ethics & Good Practice in Sport was adopted during the year and will be distributed to parents and managers before the start of the season.

Breege mentioned the various courses run by the Mayo League and the Mayo Sports Partnership and she congratulated all those who completed various courses and urged others to participate in upcoming courses.

Last years presentation nights were held in The Belmont and the Squealing Pig and Breege congratulated all the winners, especially the lads who received Special Recognition Awards for representing the club at County level - Niall Costello, Niall Sheridan, Dean, Evan & Ryan Connolly.

Breege gave particular credit to Ryan Connolly who had trials in Derby, Charlton, Southampton and Glasgow Celtic during the past season. He also attended a tournament in Qatar with Celtic. He had trials for Ireland and played for Mayo and Connaught. She wish him well in the future.

She expressed congratulations to Tom Malone on being chosen as a member of the Team of the Year in Division 2. She wished Niall Gallagher well as he moves on to a new Club and thanked him for his contribution to our Club over the years.

The U18's competed in the Quigley Cup Final during 2006 - they were beaten by Castlebar Celtic - congratulations to the players and managers on the achievements.

Breege thanked all the managers for their efforts and time spent with the various teams - from U8 to senior level.

She spoke about the recent great run with the lotto where the jackpot reached €20,000 for the second time in succession. Thanks again to all the sellers and buyers. Breege also mentioned the golf classic and thanked Joe for all his work on this fundraiser. Breege also thanked Bertie and Tony, the RSE workers for all their work during the year.

Breege paid tribute to Johnny, outgoing chairman, for his work over the past three years, a man who works away quietly, but gets things done. She wished him good health as he steps down as Chairman.

One area she felt that is neglected in the Club is the Ladies, with the club having no senior ladies team at present and she hoped the new Chairman will address this issue.

Finally, Breege wished the teams - players and managers - all the best for the coming season.

Treasurers Report:

Joe furnished everyone with a detailed Income & Expenditure Account for 2006.
While the club was in a healthy financial state he stated that there was a real danger that income will drop due to the lotto jackpot being low. If the club is to proceed with its proposed astro turf development, it will put a serious strain on the club finances.

Joe thanked Ray, Ivan, Breege, Martin and Johnny for their help with the Golf Classic and paid tribute to all those who sponsored tee boxes and teams.

Team Managers Reports:

Under 8's: Colm Burke gave his report. The emphasis was on fun and games. They trained from April to September, attending 3 blitzes and held our own blitz. Thanks to Sean, Cyril, Alan, Tommy and Martin Healy for their help.

Under 10's: Sean Gilligan gave his report. They attended 4 blitzes, winning the Plate competition in the Mayo League blitz. He apologised for not running the annual Ballyglass blitz. He thanked Tommy, Martin and Cyril for their help during the year.

Under 12's: Charlie O Malley gave his report. A reasonable year they started training in March and are still in the Connaught Shield. Finished mid table in league; got to round 3 of Mayo Cup and lost in the 1st round of the Connaught Cup. A big squad. Top scorer was Alan Morris with 22 goals followed by Bryan Walsh with 18.

When the league finished Tommy Joe Walsh brought the Under 11s to compete in the new indoor Futsal league which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all concerned, with games run over a few weeks.

Under 14's: Martin O Connor gave his report. Their season ran from March to January where they finished second in the league to Ballyheane. They reached the semi final of the Mayo Cup only to loose Castlebar Celtic. They also lost to Celtic in SFAI Cup 2-1,but the highlight of the season was reaching the 4th round of the Connaught Cup where they were beaten at home 2-0 by Strand Celtic from Sligo.

He spoke about Ryan Connolly and his exploits during the year, including being the Man of the Match in Mayo’s victory in the Kennedy Cup Plate Final.

Martin thanked the many parents who supported the games during the season. He thanked Dave Kelly and wished him well. He welcomed Joe Regan who was a great help to him over the season. He also thanked Breege for her help, Dympna Connolly of Wellcare Drycleaners for the great service she provided, Luke Kavanagh Transport for his efficiency and specially Ray Prendergast for his sponsorship of new set of jerseys.

Martin, ably assisted by Joe Sheridan and Joe Regan, took charge of the Under 15 team. They beat Yeats United 5-4 away in round one of the SFAI Cup and were also guests of Sligo Rovers later on that evening for an Eircom League match which was enjoyed by all. They were beaten by Ballinrobe Town in round 2 of the Cup.

Both the U-16 and U-18 managers were unable to attend the meeting, sending their apologies.

Under 14 girls: Michael Prenty gave his report. Trained in Carnacon during the winter to keep the girls together. Started training in March with a small squad. League changed nights of matches with games being played on different days every week which didn't suit the girls as many of them had other commitments and many weeks we were unable to field a team. He thanked Clem McLoughlin and Breege for their help.

Under 16 girls: Breege gave her report. She thanked John Burke for all his help. Originally he was to do a bit of training with the girls but he attended all the matches too. The girls won 2 games and lost 5 in the league, getting to the Semi Final of the Mayo Cup. Numbers just about enough for a team and had to use some of the Under 14's. Thanks also to Gretta Brett, who came to all the matches.

B Team: Tom Malone gave his report. Had a fairly good season with the team finishing mid table. Had a good run in the Mayo Cup getting to the Quarter Final. He thanked Pete Allgood and George O Gare and all the lads for their commitment during the season.

A Team: Joe Glynn gave his report. Not a good season, it started off well but then lost a few players with the team suffering when there was a clash of fixtures with GAA. Joe stated that the Super League is a two tier league, with the top clubs enticing in players from other clubs.

He thanked Martin Vahey and John McHugh for their help during the year and Mike Malone who sponsored tops for the season.

Martin O'Connor, incoming Chairman, addressed the meeting. He thanked Johnny for the effort and commitment he had given the club over the past three years and hopes that he will continue to be involved with the Club. He stated that Johnny had continued the tradition of past chairmen by leaving his mark on the club history through the development of the training pitch.

Martin stated that it was a privilege to accept the position of Chairman of the Club, he has been with the Club for 6 years - as PRO and underage manager and was looking forward to his new challenge and hoped he could count on the support of everyone.

While working on the website and doing the history of the Club, he realised the enormous amount of work past committees have done to get the Club where it is today with facilities which are the envy of many organisations not only in the county but throughout the province. He stated that this work ethic would once again be called upon if the club receives a positive response to its application for funding for an astro turf pitch and that the club would need the support of the local community to show that Ballyglass Football Club is a leader and not a follower when it comes to promoting football.

He wished everyone, players and managers, the best of luck in the coming season, and urged everyone to attend the upcoming U-16 match where the club had a chance to secure a league title if they defeated Westport United. Martin stated that these players were the future of the club and deserved our support.

A.O.B.

Tommy Joe thanked Pete Allgood for all the work he does on a voluntary basis in Mountpleasant National School.

Martin O Connor thanked Joe Glynn for all his work with the first team over what was a difficult year. He closed the meeting by once again wishing everyone the best of luck and thanking those who attended the meeting.
