2006 AGM Report
BALLYGLASS F.C. AGM 2006
FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
This was the main message as Ballyglass F.C. held their AGM on Sunday 5th February in the clubhouse.
Chairman Johnny Vahey welcomed everyone to the meeting and invited club Secretary Breege Jennings to read the minutes of the last AGM.
There were no matters arising.
Chairman’s address
In his Chairman’s address Johnny Vahey stated that it was a very successful year both on and off the pitch. The 1st team had secured promotion back to the Super League and he congratulated the players and management on achieving this in a strong, difficult division. He congratulated club secretary Breege Jennings on being honoured by the Mayo League as Club Secretary of the year.
Johnny stated that the weekly lotto is the lifeline of the club and he thanked the ticket sellers, the pubs for providing house prizes at each draw, and the people who purchase the tickets and said he could not emphasise the importance of the lotto to the club.
The golf classic was the main fund-raising event by the club last year and he thanked Joe Sheridan, Ivan Carroll and Ray Prendergast for organising the event. Johnny said it was one of the most successful golf classics held in Ballinrobe all year. He thanked M & C Financial Services and Premier Estates Maloney for their generous sponsorship towards the golf classic. He thanked Tom Connolly for his commitment to the club and said he was delighted to see both companies going from strength to strength.
He updated the sizeable attendance at the meeting of the state of the training pitch. Work is at an advanced state with inclement weather holding up progress at the end of the year. It is hoped to resume work soon with a provisional date for completion towards the second half of the year. Johnny singled out Sean Gilligan for giving his time and machinery during the erecting of the floodlights around the pitch. The clubhouse now had central heating and he thanked Kevin Reilly for his work in this area. New gates had been erected at the entrance to the ground to complete the changes around the excellent facilities now on offer at Ballyglass Football Club. The club had to keep up the pressure on development and he hoped to see an astro turf pitch and a gym in the near future but this would require extensive funding. A lot of hard work went into the last application for lotto grants and he appealed for new people to join the committee, especially past players, as every bit of help was now needed, Johnny said there was room for at least 4 or 5 more people on the committee.
He finished his address by thanking the out-going committee for their work during the year and said he was delighted to announce that the club had secured the services of two people to work at the club for the coming year.
Secretaries report
Club secretary Breege Jennings welcomed everyone, especially all the new comers, to the AGM and stated that it was another busy year for the club. Many club members completed courses during the year with the most recent venture at the club being the development of the clubs web site under the Mobhaile programme currently being run by Mayo county council. The club is also in the process of preparing a Code of Ethics booklet, which will be circulated to all managers before the season commences.
Breege congratulated the 1st team on winning promotion and thanked the B team managers for their hard work during the year. She also thanked all the under-age managers and said that the soccer training was on the local schools weekly agenda for the first time ever.
She congratulated all those who were called to county training during the year at the various age groups and she thanked all sponsors especially The Old Ground and KD plumbing.
Breege thanked all those who sponsors tee boxes and entered teams for the golf classic, everyone who was involved in the U-10 blitz and finished her report by offering best wishes to all for the coming season.
Treasurers report
Treasurer Joe Sheridan stated that the lotto was the lifeline of the club.
While the club received lottery funding this would only go part of the way in financing the current pitch development and while the club was in a healthy financial state, income was down and expenditure was up.
This was due to the capital development at the club. Joe stated that the golf classic was the other main fundraising event for the club during the year. He then furnished all in attendance at the AGM with a detailed statement of accounts.
Team managers reports
U-8
Cyril Burke said they had 25 children involved with 5 or 6 girls in regular attendance. He said it was great to see how much they had developed and the club should keep this age group going as they had a lot of potential. They played three games against Ballyheane and took part in a blitz in Claremorris with the emphasis on playing rather than competing. Cyril thanked Tommy Hughes for his help and stated it was important to get 3 or 4 people involved. He thanked the club for purchasing equipment and for bringing them to Supermacs at the end of the year. He stated he would not be involved next year at this age group as he intended to help out with the U-10’s.
U-10
Sean Gilligan reported on his charges at U-10 and he thanked Pat Higgins and all the parents who attended the various blitzes throughout the year.
The team competed in three competitions in Claremorris, Manulla, and Ballyglass and some great performances saw them clinching the runner-up spots on two occasions. They had a small group and he thanked Martin Healy, Colm Burke and Tommy for their help during the year.
Sean also thanked Michael Jennings of Albany DIY for sponsoring the Ballyglass U-10 blitz.
U-12
Tommy Joe Walsh reported on the U-12 team stating that they had a difficult season in a strong division. They had 25 players registered and finished with 12 points. He thanked Charlie O Malley for his help during the year.
U-14 BOYS
Martin O Connor and Dave Kelly took charge of the U-14 team and Martin delivered the report on the season, which ran from March to December. 22 players registered with a regular squad of 19 and held 36 training sessions. It was a mixed league campaign in a very competitive division and at one stage were top after five games.
The loss of key players through holidays meant they lost their way midway through the season.
They beat Ballyheane in the 1st round of the league cup and then beat Claremorris in round 2 in one of the best and exciting displays coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Unfortunately losing to S&F Utd. away in round 3.
The U-14’s lost 5-1 to Westport in round 1 of the SFAI cup but faired better in the Connaught Cup beating premier opposition in Bangor Hibs in round 1 at home, followed by Castlerea Celtic in round 2, before falling to a superior physical Strokestown team just before Christmas.
Highlights of the season apart from the Connaught Cup run was the inclusion of 3 players in the Mayo development squad namely Niall Sheridan, Ryan Connolly and Martin Connor.
Niall and Ryan were part of the final Kennedy Cup Squad that travelled to Limerick.
While Ryan is still involved with the academy there was more good news before Christmas when Paul Mannion was called to participate in training sessions with the Mayo Squad.
Martin thanked Dave Kelly whose valuable services the club lost during the year and said he would like to wish him the best of luck on his road to recovery.
A big thanks to Breege Jennings for all her help organising buses and also to Dympna Connolly for the excellent service with the jerseys.
He thanked all the parents who took part in a new venture tried, by asking them to cover one match each whether it was home or away. Martin said he hopes it develops next year with more parents involved.
Finally he thanked Joe Sheridan who came on board to add valuable experience during the year
In conclusion Martin stated he was disappointed with the running of the league and their division was never completed. They played 12 won 6 lost 5 drew 1 with two games never played.
U-16 BOYS
In delivering his report on the U-16 team Tom Connolly echoed the disappointment with the running of the league which began last June and still had not been completed. The team was in mid table and he said it was a good season. Tom said that the U-16 squad was a great bunch and thanked Gary Hamilton for his help during the season . He also welcomed the Hamilton family to the Ballyglass area. He thanked Martin O Connor and Dave Kelly for their help at the start of the season. He concluded by making the point that he found it strange for the league to fix an U-16 and U-18 match for the same day, he hoped this was not a trend that would continue in the future.
U-18
Tom Connolly was again centre stage as he delivered his report on his U-18 charges. It was a strange season, starting in October but with only two league games and three cup games played to date. It was an excellent squad with a lot of these players capable of playing 1st team football if they keep up their commitment. He congratulated the players on their excellent professional performance the previous day when they beat neighbours Manuela, 1-0 in the first round of the Quigley cup. Tom thanked Breege Jennings for her trojan work during the year and thanked Alan and John McHugh for their help. Finally he wished the best of luck to all the U-18 players for the rest of the season.
U-16 Girls
Breege Jennings reported that there were 15 players registered with 11 of these eligible again next year. Their league form was won 4 lost 3 with 1 game unplayed. Again there was problems with the running of the league.
The team also got to the second round of the All-Ireland cup.
B Team
Manager John McHugh reported that the team finished third from bottom. They had a lot of players at the start of the season but numbers dwindled as the season progressed. They reached the quarter final of the cup. John thanked Pat Higgins for his help during the season. He also paid tribute to sponsors KD Plumbing and to Pat and Mary Warde from the Old Ground for their generous sponsorship during the year.
Ist Team
Joe Glynn said it was a very successful year with the team gaining promotion to the Super League by finishing second to Castlebar Celtic B. In the process they became the only team to beat Celtic all season, the victory coming in the home game. Despite a poor start the team improved to get the automatic promotion spot. He thanked Sean Gilligan, Martin Vahey, John McHugh and Pat Higgins for their help during the season. He thanked all the players especially those who travelled to Ballyglass from Galway for mid-week games.
There will be six new faces at this years committee meetings with Pete Allgoode, Hannah Hamilton, Michael Flannery, Darren Reilly, Colm Burke and Cyril Burke joining the new committee. All out-going officers were returned with all other committee members returned en bloc.
